04  Research4Riney

In late 2014 at the age of 28, our friend Catherine Ross was diagnosed with Stage III bowel cancer. At the time of her diagnosis, Catherine had just accepted her dream job as a primary school teacher in Melbourne.

Following her diagnosis, Catherine has had extensive chemotherapy and surgery. Her cancer spread and she now has secondary (stage IV) bowel cancer. In early 2017, Catherine participated in an immunotherapy trial. Unfortunately the trial was unsuccessful for her and the cancer progressed.

Catherine currently lives near Birregurra with her husband Jamie and many animals, and is receiving chemotherapy again to reduce and control her cancer. She has been told there is no known cure for her cancer.

Faced with all this, Catherine decided to start a movement that would inspire friends, family and the wider community to raise funds and awareness for bowel cancer research. That she has done – we are constantly inspired by Catherine and the work she is doing.

In May 2017, Catherine started Research4Riney. ‘Riney’ is Catherine’s nickname to many close friends and family. Catherine wanted to support the charities that have supported her, by raising funds for Bowel Cancer Australia, the Jodie Lee Foundation and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. Since May 2017, Research4Riney has donated more than $80,000.

On Saturday 24 March 2018, a gala evening will be held to raise funds and awareness for these organisations supported by Research4Riney. We are honoured to be a major partner for the evening.
